Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and another man who fled after the incident was found soon after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed local news, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
