Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it respected Summers' choice to depart.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the Board," the organization commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will subsequently head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his view on the matter following pressure from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The messages revealed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to introduce Summers to notable world leaders.

After the emails were made available with the public, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my misguided judgment to continue corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he wanted "to restore faith and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".

Career Background

The economist occupied high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the group.

Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
