NBA game action

Miami recorded eighty-six opening half scores against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat secured a crushing 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
