A significant manufacturing zone located in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive contamination following a government taskforce found presence of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities within the site, which includes companies shipping chilled seafood.

Urgent Response and Product Withdrawal

This discovery has triggered immediate cleanup efforts and the relocation of local residents, coming after a similar contamination scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

A major multinational store chain is among the companies that have withdrawn products from their shelves following the discovery.

Probe and Detection of Pollution

The country's officials initiated an inquiry when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled breaded prawns exported by an Indonesian firm.

The FDA issued an warning instructing distributors and retailers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the found amount was well under the authority's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an acute risk to consumers.

The authority stated: “The primary health effect of worry after extended, ongoing low dose exposure (for example through eating of polluted products or water over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 factories in the industrial area were contaminated. The official team did not identify the 21 additional production sites, but said they would promptly receive decontamination processes carried out by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

The environment minister stated that residents residing in strongly contaminated areas would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
